Stereotypes and archetypes

Difference between stereotypes and archetypes –
A stereotype is generally based on a person or image that has been fitted into a simplified opinion that may have been formed on truths, but it more often than not incorrect. For example, “The nerd” stereotype is generally weak, skinny person with large glasses and a book in his/her hands.  The word is not limit to individuals though. You could also have as stereotypical horror film too as another example, with stereotypical characters in that. e.g manly jockey, dumb blonde etc.
Archetype is based on something that was original or prototyped and has been developed into something ideal. It could be a hero such as Hercules or superman or an adventurer and by incorporating  some realistic elements it makes it realistic to the viewer.
